Well folks, this month I've been delving into an exciting new game from Brotherwise Games: Unearth! Its sharp geometric artwork drew me in immediately, but the deceptively thoughtful gameplay truly amplified the experience. And considering how badly I lost, it says a lot that I couldn't wait for round two!
The game itself is fairly simple: you play as a tribe of Delvers seeking relics in lost cities from long ago via a bend-your-luck dice placement system. Each die represents one of your delvers and rolling them provides different effects. The great part is that no matter how “well” you roll, there is always a strategic benefit to further your plan. Roll low, and you're adding resources toward building wonders. Roll high, and you're competing with the best of them to claim ruins.
Each path to victory is viable and can mix in interesting ways to maximize your end of game point totals. Add in the special delver cards you gain while exploring, and you'll find that Unearth harbors some serious complexity beneath its colorful surface. We have a demo copy at Top Tier, and I highly recommend giving it a go as soon as possible!
I have been playing Arkham Horror: The Card Game. Arkham Horror is a Living Card Game as well as an RPG. The game follows you and your friends as you uncover evil plans of cultists as well as fighting monstrous creatures from beyond the veil. What I like about the game is that you create your character by making a unique deck that you will use for the game. As you complete tasks and progress through the very deep story line you gain victory points that you use to purchase additional and more powerful cards to add to your character's deck.
What I love about the game is the great story it tells. With the core set you have three scenarios, and once you have completed them, there are expansions that bring you even farther down the story. Every month Fantasy Flight releases a Mythos Pack that is another chapter in the story line. Another thing that I like is that the characters have lasting effects from previous encounters with monsters and taking injuries. I have really enjoyed this game a lot and couldn't recommend it enough. With smooth game play and the ability to play with 1 to 4 players it is a great time and a great price for a ton of fun!
I played 7 Wonders for the first time a few weeks ago and all I could wonder was "How in the world have I never played this before?" This game is simply incredible and I've been constantly asking people to play it since. Seriously, ask me about it next time you see me. I might even play a round with you!
The game plays out in a series of Ages, in which you draft cards to build your city. Buildings (cards) can be simple resources like clay pits or stone quarries, or other more advanced constructs like barracks to create a mighty military, a temple to cultivate culture in your city, or an observatory that supports scientific advancement. Some cards are free - usually basic resources like wood and ore - while others often require resources or gold to build. Certain cards reward you with gold when you build them, but one potentially lucrative method for obtaining gold is having desirable resources that your neighbors need. Players can pay each other to "borrow" resources they might need to build their city, but only from the people directly to their left and right. The same applies to military conquest: you can only attack the players next to you.
Each player is also attempting to build a Wonder for the ages, which usually rewards victory points along with some in-game benefit like extra military strength or free resources. Each stage of a Wonder must be built in order, but this can done at any time. In fact, certain Wonders benefit from being completed early, while others work better late in the game. Don't worry if you don't complete yours though, as this is not required to win the game.
After three Ages the game ends and each player adds up their victory points, which can be acquired in many different ways, and the player with the highest total wins! Maybe you decided to focus on military and culture, while another player across the table attempted to gather as much gold as possible and construct their Wonder. Watch out for the player who took all the science buildings, because those points add up quickly! Whatever your chosen path to victory may be, I definitely recommend giving this game a try. If you do, come talk to me because I'd love to hear what you think about it!
That's all this time around, but be sure to check back in next month for a glimpse into what's new, what's good, and What We're Playing!
The long wait is over. Starfinder is finally here! This science fantasy roleplaying game, set thousands of years in Pathfinder's future, is fresh off the press and available at Top Tier today!

Dominoes with a kingdom building twist.
Each turn, connect a new domino to your existing kingdom, making sure at least one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type already in play. The game mechanics for obtaining the tiles is clever: the order of who picks first depends on which tile was previously chosen. Kingdomino is a mix between dominoes and a kingdom builder with a set-collecting element. Each player starts with a castle, then takes turns choosing tiles to add lands to their kingdom. The better tiles have higher numbers, and the higher the number of the tile you choose, the later in the next turn you’ll be able to choose your tile.
The object of the game is to connect as many of the same type of tile as you can, together with crown tiles that allow you to collect points, and end the game with the most points. But be careful which tiles you choose, because similar to dominoes you must connect a matching end of your new tile to your existing plot of land.
If you’re stuck with a type of land that you don’t already have (maybe because you chose the best tile last turn and ended up with the last pick this turn) that tile simply can’t be added to your kingdom, and you won’t get any points for it. Plan carefully, think ahead, and consider your opponent’s choices as well to ensure you rule the best kingdom!
Kingdomino is simple enough for children to learn and play, but with enough complexity to keep veterans coming back. It’s also super quick to pick up and get a game in, taking an average of 10-15 minutes including learning how to play your first time!

This month the name of the game is Shadow Hunters from Z-Man Games, and it's one of my absolute favorites! I love a game that scales to fit your playgroup, and few do that better than this anime-styled mystery survival game. It plays between four and eight players and actually excels the higher the player count becomes!
Players are all trapped in a danger-filled forest and serve one of three factions: the evil Shadows, the Hunters who track them, or the poor neutrals caught in between. Each player assumes the secret identity of a character within one of those factions with their own stats, win conditions, and special abilities. Players then roll dice to acquire equipment and weapons to defend themselves as well as clues to help them deduce their fellows' identities. The goal? To find out who your allies are before your enemies find you and satisfy the win condition on your card! These conditions can range from defeating all Shadows to collecting specific equipment to even being the first to die.
The game is simple enough to introduce new players to tabletop gaming but complex enough to keep board game veterans on their toes to the very end. Stop on by Top Tier, and I'll be happy to show you why Shadow Hunters is one of the best large-party games out there!
I have recently started playing Magic the Gathering Hour of Devastation draft. I haven't played in a draft in about 3 years and I must say this set is great to draft!!
Magic the Gathering has a way to play called draft. You take 3 packs of cards and in a group you all open one pack. You take one card and pass it to the next person and have one pack passed to you for you to take another card. You do this till all packs are open and you have drafted 45 cards. With those cards you make a 40 card deck and play in a tournament to maybe win some prizes and a free FNM promo card.
I really like the aesthetic of this set. The whole Egyptian vibe is really cool and all the mummies are great! I had a blast drafting mummies and cards that turn into mummies. The whole set is full of fun cards and cool abilities. I totally recommend drafting this set.

Dice Forge is a resource management dice-rolling game for 2-4 players with a unique twist - the dice crafting mechanic allows players to buy new faces for their dice so you can upgrade and customize your dice to your liking. Players each start with the same two six-sided dice, and at the beginning of each turn all players roll their dice and add the indicated resources to their resource pool, which is tracked on a player board.
There are three types of resources - Sun Shards, Moon Shards, and Gold. Gold can be used to forge new die faces so that every time you roll your dice, you're maximizing your potential resources. The four main types of die faces to forge are progressively higher numbers of Gold, Sun Shards, Moon Shards, and Glory Points. The player at the end of the game with the most Glory Points wins the game, so don't neglect these!
Sun Shards and Moon Shards are used to Perform Heroic Feats, or buy cards that have special abilities to help you in your quest for Glory. Each card has a Glory Point value associated with it that is immediately added to your total, as well as some other useful effect. Some cards only give you a large amount of Glory, while others return a small amount in addition to their effect, for example allowing you to reroll your dice every turn or forge one of the special die faces like the 3x multiplier that can only be accessed through these cards. To perform a Heroic Feat (buy a card), move your pawn to the island with the card you wish to buy. If another hero already occupies that island, they are ousted and returned to the starting area. Heroes who are ousted receive a Divine Blessing and are allowed to roll their dice and apply the subsequent effects, so be careful and choose your Heroic Feats carefully!
Each turn, all players roll their dice and apply the effects of the dice. On their turn, the hero can then move their pawn to a spot they have the resources for and buy the upgrade or card of their choice, then the turn passes to the next player. Once each player has taken a turn, the round ends. After a set number of rounds depending on the number of players, the game is over and the player with the most Glory Points ascends to the rank of demigod and wins!

Ever since College Town Escape Rooms ran a custom room for us at Top Tier last Valentine's Day, I've been hankering to find a similar experience with less legwork (What can I say? I'm lazy). So what do I find? Unlock! Escape Adventures. Boom. It's an escape room in a box, and I love it.
You have 60 minutes to solve a string of observation and logic-based puzzles via a deck of clues. Much like a real escape room, you begin (either alone or with up to five friends) in a “room” with a series of mysterious objects and a mission. A free downloadable App times you, gives hints when asked, and provides a space to enter each code you discover as you progress. Mistakes will be made of course, and what I love is the time penalties stacked upon you with too much guessing and not enough mental gymnastics. Each error cuts three minutes off your total clock, and once it hits zero, you lose. Buh-bye. Better luck next time.
But hey! No shame in that. I lost my first time, so we just fired it up and began anew. Unlock! currently has three adventures available, and I hear they're cooking up more, so check it out!
RuneWars is a game set in the Runebound universe, the same setting as Descent. The game is a fantasy miniature based army game where humans and undead battle over control of the battlefield and its riches! With later expansions that are coming in the next couple of months, elves and another mystery faction will be added to the game. The game has rank and file units as well as heroes, monsters, and all manner of other things used to fight over objectives or just outright kill your opponent.
Since I first saw the preview of the game a year ago I have been super excited to try this game. After owning and trying the game I was not disappointed in the least! The game took everything I loved about Warhammer Fantasy and X-Wing and smashed it all together! From upgrades and heroes to rank and file combat.
Something that drew me to the game was the cool miniatures. I never liked any undead miniatures until I saw the Waiqar (undead faction). I had all of the box painted up and ready to go in under a few weeks. The flow of the game is very fast and easy which is another reason I love to play this game! I love this game and can't wait for more expansions to add to it! I hope more people will try it out and get into the immense world of RuneWars!
Warhammer 40k is a miniatures wargame set in the far future of the year 40,000. Due to vast, galaxy-spanning conflicts between such factions as the Eldar, Space Marines, and Chaos Daemons, a seemingly eternal war rages across all of known space in the wreckage of civilization. 40k brings those battles to the tabletop for you to recreate with your friends. You can assemble, customize, and paint your models to your own liking, meaning no two armies are alike.
I’ve wanted to get started in 40k for a long time, but that price tag was always so daunting. Well, with the release of the new 8th edition ruleset we’re doing an escalation league that starts small (and cheap!) and allows me to build up my forces over time, so I figured there’s no time like the present. I started in miniatures with Guild Ball about a year and a half ago due to its low entry cost, small scale, and fun back-and-forth style of play. My experiences with Guild Ball have only strengthened my desire to play even more miniatures games, and this new edition of Warhammer 40k was the perfect opportunity to pick it up!
My first army is going to be Daemons of Tzeentch, the Chaos god. I was drawn to them because of their trickster nature and, to be honest, because the models just look great. Whether I stick with them or move on to completely different armies, I’m looking forward to many great games of 40k in my future!
That's all this time around, but be sure to check back in next month for a glimpse into what's new, what's good, and What We're Playing!
Queen Himiko has tasked every builder in the kingdom with a prestigious mission: build the capital of Yamataï and make it the jewel of the archipelago. Your task: surpass your competitors and build the most prestigious city of them all, using resources from the fleets that travel through the kingdom. However, you are not alone in competing for Queen Himiko’s favor… will you manage to surpass your opponents?
In Yamataï, players compete to earn prestige points using different strategies. Clear the different islands of the archipelago to recruit powerful specialists that will assist you, or use the resources carried by the boats that navigate between them to construct buildings on the islands! And, if you’re skilled enough, try creating prestigious buildings such as high temples or rare torii.
We've got early access to this fantastic new title, so you can own a copy before anyone else. Don't miss out!
Unite the Scattered Tribes of Ethnos and Lead Them Into a New Age!
Ethnos is a mythical realm filled with creatures big and small. As the last Age ended, war and revolt left the inhabitants without someone to lead them into their future. Players must call upon the support of giants, merfolk, halfings, minotaurs, and other fantasy tribes to help them gain control of the land. After three ages of play, whoever has collected the most glory wins!
Who can you trust?
Oh Captain! is a game of bluffing and deception for three to six players from Ludonaute. You and your friends take on the role of survivors of a shipwreck, saved by a mysterious creature known as the Nukha. Your second chance at life hasn’t quelled your lust for gold though, as the Captain’s order to recover the finest treasures from the Nukha’s den sparks a mutinous idea in the crew’s head: The Captain knows treasure will be found, but not exactly what was found.
Design the best bear park!
In Bärenpark, players will attempt to build the best bear park not only for the most massive Kodiak bears, but also polar bears and even Koalas! Yes, we know Koalas aren’t bears. But they were too cute to leave out so they’re here! Design the bear park that pleases the most visitors, placing animal enclosures, restrooms and shops to win the game!
You've surived Fuse, but your work is just beginning!
The flames are subsiding and the smoke is clearing, but there is significant damage to your ship, there are injuries among your crew members, and the life support systems are failing. As the ship’s Medics, you must work together to treat all your patients before time runs out!

Become the preeminent shipping magnate!
In Le Havre, players take turns amassing goods like cattle and grain brought into port by ship to either upgrade, sell, or use as building materials. Buildings are an investment opportunity as well as a revenue stream, as players must pay to rent building space they do not own.
Players must use their goods wisely to build their own buildings and ships to bring in and store more goods. But don't forget to feed your workers!

Cry Havoc is an asymmetric, card-driven area control game for 2-4 players. Each player controls one of the four unique races and fights viciously to gather the most Crystals on the planet, which will more than offset the costs of the conflict. To do this, players must customize their decks of cards, Build powerful Structures, and leverage their unique Skills to gain victory. Each faction has their own special abilities they can use to accomplish their goals.
The Humans are a resourceful and flexible invading Faction. Their Skills allow them to quickly expand Control without actually moving Units into the Regions, and their Structures allow them to defend their Regions without devoting a large number of Units to the cause. The Humans can frequently score for their Regions, allowing them to move about nomadically and respond to threats dynamically.
With powerful technology and a research focus, the Pilgrims act reclusively to profit from the planet’s resources. Whereas other races must maintain Control of a Region to score its Crystals, the Pilgrims are able to extract the Crystals, then use them to score Victory Points or activate powerful Skills. They may then withdraw to gather strength, only to teleport into hostile Regions when their power is maximized once again.
Slow, methodical, unstoppable. This describes the unrelenting drive of the Machines. Highly focused on building aggressive offensive and defensive Structures, the Machines slowly turn the planet into their fortress. Unlike all other Factions, the Machines can move Structures between Regions and quickly convert Units to Structures, and vice versa, to optimize their tools and weaponry for every situation.
The Trogs are the brutal, primitive, tribal species indigenous to the planet. They lack advanced technology, which they make up for with intimate knowledge of the planet and brute force. A successful Trog player must carefully manage their Reserves. Trogs can use their Skills to remove Units from Regions in order to place, move, and resolve Trog Nest tokens. In doing so, Trogs are able to ambush the invading species at the time and place of their choosing, which makes up for their lack of powerful Structures.
The indigenous Trogs play a special role in Cry Havoc. In 2- and 3-player games, the Trogs are not controlled by a player, but they act as a deterrent to the invaders’ aggression. In 4-player games, however, a player can assume control of the Trog hordes to halt the hostile take-over of their planet.
Each round, players take turns using cards from their personal decks to move their units, attack or defend from enemy forces, take control of regions of the board, and collect crystals for more victory points. Players can also take advantage of the unique terrain in their area by drawing from the Terrain Tactics deck to give themselves a wider range of options in battle.
When a player moves their units onto a space already occupied by enemy units, or with a Trog War Party or Trog Nest token, battle breaks out between the opposing forces. Players can then use the battle to their advantage, by attempting to gain control of the region, take enemy forces prisoner, or simply kill enemy units outright.
After battles are resolved, players gain victory points for the regions they control and the crystals contained within. The player with the most victory points after the final round has been resolved wins the game!
This year we're running a multi-system mega-dungeon! Players will work together using different RPG systems to accomplish a common goal. Sign-ups for our Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar Escalation League are now open! Grab a new army or build on an existing one across six rounds and twelve weeks, facing off against a new opponent each round.
While we strive to make every event friendly and accessible for new players, our Warhammer 40k event starts at 1000 points, a tall order for a player first starting out. To this end, we suggest new players start with Age of Sigmar, using just 250 points worth of models. Our Warhammer 40k league is also designed for veterans in that it offers 10% off Citadel products for the duration of the league. Join up, and build on a side army to see how you fair!
Each Escalation League will restrict players to one army or codex. Army lists do not have to be identical from round to round, but must be from the same army or codex.
